Verizon MiFi/Hotspot Information and Recall
If you have a Verizon MiFi/Hotspot, please read the following two documents.
Dear Waipahu Intermediate School Parents, Guardians and Students,
This letter is to inform you that the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) received notification that Verizon has recalled the Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspots, which our schools distributed to students for distance learning.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has cited situations where the internal lithium-ion battery in the mobile hotspots can overheat,
posing a fire and burn hazard. This issue impacts over 2.5 million mobile hotspots nationally.
The safety of our students, families and staff members is our top priority. We are working diligently with HIDOE’s Office of Information Technology Services and Verizon to replace and exchange all recalled hotspots as quickly as possible. Please do not return school-issues hotspots directly to Verizon or to Verizon Stores.
To help students stay connected until new devices are received, Verizon has provided interim measures to help reduce the risk of the device overheating. These measures include over-the-air automatic software updates that prevent the hotspots from charging while plugged in and turned on, as well as best practices for the safe operation of hotspots. An information sheet with instructions is provided with this letter. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
